Volkswagen's Golf Cabriolet may be back on the scene, but the topless version of the iconic Beetle isn't about to disappear.

VW has reportedly confirmed this week that the new Beetle Cabriolet will debut, in concept form at least, at this month's Beijing Auto Show.

According to industry paper Automotive News, the showcar concept will be based on the E-Bugster that appeared at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

The hardtop version of the all-new Beetle is expected to hit Australia late next year or in early 2013, but we can likely expect the Cabrio to make its international production debut in the later months of 2012.

Globally, the Cabrio proved the most popular style for the previous-generation 'New Beetle', so the sooner Volkswagen can get this one out of the factory, the better.

As these earlier spy shots show, the Beetle Cabrio will retain its fabric soft-top and flat belt line.

While the testcar here is wearing the old model's bumpers, we can expect to see the squared-off bumpers of the new Beetle on the final product.

The Beetle Cabrio will feature a range of engines internationally, but in Australia we can expect to see Volkswagen's 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
