2012 TOYOTA LANDCRUISER

Toyota's updated-for-2012 LandCruiser 200 is now on sale in Australia, bringing styling tweaks, new features and a new petrol V8 engine.

Revealed in 2009, the LandCruiser's new 4.6 litre V8 will replace the existing 4.7 litre engine. Despite its smaller size, the big wagon's new heart brings improved figures across the board.

Styling and Features

On the outside, the giant 200 Series gets a boxier front bumper, a subtly updated grille design and, depending on the specification, new LED-equipped headlights.

GX

Powered by Toyota's 195kW/650Nm 4.5 litre diesel V8, the rugged entry-level GX picks up a Turn Assist function for its CRAWL off-road cruise control system. The system also gains two new low-speed settings, up from three.

Toyota's engineers have also tweaked the GX's ABS to work with engine output, acceleration and wheel speed while dealing with sand, mud and gravel surfaces.

Updates in the 2012 GX's cabin are limited to the addition of a fuel economy meter.

Standard features in the GX include six airbags, vehicle stability control, active traction control, hill-start assist and multi-terrain anti-skid brakes.

The GX is equipped with vinyl floors, vertically-hinged twin barn doors, 17-inch steel wheels, a snorkel, 93 litre main and 45 litre auxiliary fuel tanks and under-body protection plates.

Manual air-conditioning, power windows with driver's auto up/down and power-operated exterior mirrors are among the creature comforts.

The GX price is unchanged at $77,990 (plus on-roads). Click here for more details on the LandCruiser 200 GX.

New 4.6 litre V8 Petrol Engine

Beyond the GX, all LandCruiser 200 variants are available with either the 4.5 litre diesel, or the 4.6 litre V8 petrol engine.

Replacing the 4.7 litre V8 engine, the 4.6 litre mill produces 228kW and 439Nm of torque, compared to 202kW and 410Nm for the outgoing engine.

Paired with the diesel engine's six-speed auto (replacing the five-speed of the outgoing model), the V8 petrol engine lists fuel consumption figures of 13.6 l/100km, down from 14.5 for the old mill.

To help reduce cold-start emissions, a new single-pump air injection system speeds the warming of the catalysts by inducting air through the exhaust ports.

GXL

On top of the features offered in the GX, the GXL gains satellite navigation with a new 6.1-inch touchscreen system that includes a CD player and USB connectivity.

An alarm system has been added as well as a 220-volt connector in the rear, while a reversing camera is standard.

The 2012 GXL gets a black grille with a chrome frame, along with revised halogen headlights, with an independent clearance lamp between the low and high-beam lamps.

Side indicators are now integrated into the exterior mirrors, and the rear end gets new dual-LED lights. It also has a roof spoiler.

The Petrol GXL is priced at $83,990, and the diesel at $88,990.

KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System) is standard on the petrol version and a $3,250 option on the diesel.

Developed in Australia, Toyota's KDSS automatically adjusts the front and rear anti-roll bars, improving handling, stability and ride comfort.

VX and Sahara

The top-shelf VX and Sahara models pick up a Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system - new to the LandCruiser range. The system regulates wheel spin, working with the multi-terrain ABS.

Both variants get a new grille style, with grey metallic slats and a chrome frame. The fog lights also have chrome surrounds, and a pair of parking sensors are included front and rear.

New auto-levelling HID headlights are featured, along with daylight-running LED lights.

Other features for these two grades include rain-sensing wipers, new 18-inch alloy wheels and power-retractable exterior mirrors.

In the cabin, both get leather-accented trim, chrome highlights and a revised multi-information could display.

The diesel variant has seven seats and the petrol variant seats eight.

VX models are fitted with a 3.5-inch thin-film transistor screen for viewing the multi-information display.

Sahara

Beyond the VX, the Sahara alone features a four-camera multi-terrain monitor, climate-controlled front seats, a powered tailgate and a three-position memory for the driver's seat.

Other new features include a new side moulding with chrome highlights, heated seats in the second row (along with the front seats) and a hard-disc-drive for navigation maps.

The Sahara's multi-information display also now shows steering-wheel angle, speed and turn-by-turn navigation.

Other standard Sahara features include four-zone climate-control air-conditioning, a cool box, rear-seat DVD entertainment system and electro-chromatic rear-view mirror.

As with its predecessor, the new range is covered by Toyota Service Advantage with services capped at $210 for each of up to six standard scheduled services in the first three years or 60,000km.
