Subaru Australia has announced the arrival of the all-new Impreza hatchback and sedan, bringing a new engine, new transmissions, new technology and more efficiency to the company's small car entrant.

The old Impreza R, RX and RS badges are gone, instead replaced by the 2.0i, 2.0i-L and 2.0i-S nomenclature used by the recently-launched Subaru XV range.

There are no price rises for the base model, with the entry-grade Impreza 2.0i sedan and hatch priced at $23,990 before on-roads.

Increased levels of standard equipment make the mid-grade Impreza 2.0i-L and high-grade 2.0i-S more expensive than their predecessors though, with pricetags of $26,990 and $31,990 respectively.

Much of the pricetag increase on the 2.0i-S is due to the removal of a manual transmission option, making the more expensive automatic gearbox the only option.

New standard features include auto engine start-stop, Bluetooth and an interactive multi-function display for all models.

Mechanical Package

The 2012 Impreza's bodyshell is around 25 percent stiffer than the previous-gen's chassis, yet weighs 10kg lighter. Overall weight for the Impreza 2.0i is 1345kg - identical to the outgoing model.

The 2012 Impreza's all-new FB20 2.0 litre flat-four engine (the same as that used by the Impreza-based XV) also has similar numbers to the engine it replaces.

Peak power is 110kW and peak torque is 196Nm - the same as the superceded EJ20 flat-four.

Engine stroke and the compression ratio have been increased to deliver greater fuel efficiency, and the engine internals are lighter to further improve economy.

Fuel consumption for the six-speed manual comes in at 7.1 l/100km, which is substantially lower than the old Impreza R manual's average economy of 8.9 l/100km.

The CVT-equipped 2012 Impreza 2.0i is even more frugal, drinking 6.8 l/100km on average.

Suspension is broadly similar in design to the previous generation Impreza, with minor changes to geometry, damper valving, spring rates, bushing materials plus the addition of strengthened mounting points.

The front swaybar is now 22mm in diameter, up from 20mm. This stiffens up the front suspension and helps reduce body roll and improve steering response.

Features and Interior

Inside, Subaru has given the Impreza's cabin an extensive makeover.

There are softer materials, higher-quality switchgear and a myriad of storage options, as well as reshaped seats that provide better upper-body support, and more comfortable cushion materials.

Subaru has also increased rear passenger comfort by slightly stretching the Impreza's wheelbase to create more back seat legroom.

Combined with the reshaped door cards that improve elbow-room, the Impreza's cabin is now much roomier than ever before.

Cargo capacity is quite respectable for a small car too, with the hatchback able to carry 340 litres with the rear seats in place.

The sedan's boot measures in at a substantial 460 litres, and split-fold back seats enables that area to expand.

The 2012 Subaru Impreza range starts with the Impreza 2.0i, which comes standard with engine start-stop, climate control, Bluetooth telephony, a USB input for the audio system, a trip computer housed with in the multi-function display, and automatic engine-start stop.

The 2.0i-L mid-grade model adds extra functions to the multi-function display, as well as dual-zone climate control, a reversing camera, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and gearshifter, privacy glass, 16-inch alloys and foglamps.

At the top of the new Impreza range sits the 2.0i-S, which brings with it alloy pedals, upgraded upholstery, a different instrument cluster design, chrome exterior accents, side skirts and 17-inch alloys.

Both the 2.0i-L and 2.0i-S can be fitted with an option pack, which includes sat-nav, an electric sunroof and, in the case of the 2.0i-S, leather upholstery and a powered driver's seat.
