Mercedes' new GL-Class SUV is expected to make its debut at next month's New York Auto Show - an ideal unveiling for the big SUV that was designed specifically for the US market.

The new model has been spied testing in Europe and in the US more than a few times over the past year, with only the barest covering of black camouflage.

Our spy photos reveal that while it will remain as boxy as its predecessor, the new GL-Class will get Merc's new front- and rear-end style.

The now-familiar upright grille dominates the face of the new GL, flanked by wave-like headlights inspired by the decidedly sleeker CLS four-door coupe.

As with the current model, the front bumper features a set of daytime running-lights, and the lower skid-plate sits beneath larger air intakes.

At the rear, there's a new tail-light design that reaches into the tailgate, beneath a rooftop spoiler - although that will likely figure as an optional feature.

While the new GL-Class is known to be based on a version of the platform underpinning the new M-Class (also featured in the new Jeep Grand Cherokee), further technical details remain unclear.

Powertrain options are expected to include Mercedes' new direct-injected V6 and V8 engines - in the case of the AMG variant, that should included the new 5.5 litre twin-turbo V8.

In Australia, the current-generation GL-Class is powered by a 3.0 litre V6 turbo-diesel producing 165kW and 510Nm of torque, and a 285kW/530Nm 5.5 litre petrol V8.
