2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Pricing Announced

Mercedes-Benz Australia has released pricing for the 2012 E63 AMG sedan and has also announced the addition of a wagon to the E63 range.

Mercedes-Benz Australia has released pricing for the 2012 E63 AMG sedan and has also announced the addition of a wagon to the E63 range.

Although outwardly similar to the 2011 model, the 2012 E63 range utilises Benz's new 5.5 litre twin-turbo V8 instead of the long-serving 6.2 litre naturally aspirated V8 that until now has been the mainstay of many AMG vehicles.

Despite the drop in displacement, the addition of two turbochargers means the new engine puts out the same power as the old 6.2 litre (386kW, to be exact) and a massive 700Nm of torque - 70Nm more than the outgoing V8.

Add the optional AMG Performance pack, and outputs jump to an eye-widening 410kW and 800Nm. With the Performance package applied, 0-100km/h sprint times are just 4.2 seconds for the sedan and 4.3 seconds for the estate. Add one-tenth of a second for E63's without the AMG Performance package.

For reference, the outgoing E63 manages to hit 100km/h from rest in 4.5 seconds.

But not only is it faster than the outgoing E63, it's thriftier. Fuel economy on the combined cycle is 10.0 l/100km for the sedan and 10.1 l/100km for the wagon, not bad for a high-performance luxury sedan, and definitely better than the superseded model's 12.7 l/100km figure.

The previous E63's seven-speed AMG Speedshift MCT automatic gearbox carries over, but a new addition for 2012 is a fuel-saving start stop function. By shutting down that big V8 when the vehicle is stopped at traffic lights, big savings in fuel economy can be had.

Suspension hardware carries over too, and features a 56mm wider track than 'regular' E-Class models and completely unique front suspension hardware.

The standard brake package consists of an AMG high-performance brake system, with two-piece rotors and six-piston calipers on the front axle. The E63's 19-inch alloys have been redesigned for 2012 and are shod with 225/35 Continental tyres up front, and 285/30 rubber at the rear.

Exterior changes are minimal and limited to new "V8 Biturbo" badging and the aformentioned 19-inch wheels, however inside there's a new steering wheel (pinched from the CLS 63 AMG) and a revised instrument cluster.

Pricing

There are no changes to the E63 AMG sedan's pricing, and the E63 AMG estate - a new addition to the range - only carries a modest premium. Full retail pricing is as follows, and does not include on-road costs:

  • 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG sedan: $240,985
  • 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG estate: $244,500
  • AMG Performance Package: $17,900 (sedan), $16,900 (estate)
