With mere hours until its official unveiling at this week's LA Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz has given the 2012 CLS 63 AMG an early online unveiling today.

As predicted, the new CLS 63 AMG has dropped Mercedes' venerable 6.2 litre V8 in favour of the company's new 5.5 litre bi-turbo V8, producing 386kW and 700Nm of torque - up 8kW and 70Nm on the naturally-aspired 6.2 V8.

The 5.5 litre V8 engine's maximum power is available at 4400rpm, with the huge torque figure coming online between 2000rpm and 4500rpm.

As with other models in Merc's performance family, an even more powerful version of the engine will be offered, with power jumping to 410kW and 800Nm of torque thanks to the AMG Performance Package.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through Mercedes' seven-speed multi-clutch transmission, and fuel economy is rated (in the US market) at around 14 l/100km in the city and 11 l/100km on the highway - an overall improvement of about 33 percent.

The 0-100km/h sprint is covered in 4.4 seconds, with a top speed of 250km/h.

The CLS 63 benefits from the same mechanical tweaks as its siblings in the AMG stable, including revised suspension, braking and aero components.

Inside, the top-shelf CLS gets Mercedes' COMAND interface and control system with a 40gb hard-drive and GPS navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, 14-speaker Harman/Kardon LOGIC7 surround sound and Dolby Digital 5.1.

The system also features an HD digital radio, in-dash six-disc DVD/CD changer, SD card reader and iPod and MP3 compatibility.

Comfort features include a multifunction leather sports steering wheel with steering-mounted shift paddles, 14-way power-adjustable seats with three-position memory and heating.

Australia

Speaking  with TMR today, Mercedes-Benz Australia's Senior Manager for Corporate Communications, David McCarthy confirmed that the CLS 63 AMG will make its debut in the second quarter of 2011.

"We haven't decided on the AMG Performance Package yet; I suspect 400kW will be enough, and we've had two orders already," Mr McCarthy said.

Pricing and further details will be confirmed closer to next year's launch.
