Chrysler's new Pentastar V6 engine is making its way across the carmaker's line-up, appearing already in the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the new 300C and the updated Grand Voyager.
Jeep's iconic Wrangler range is the latest to graduate to the new engine, an update we'll see in Australian showrooms later this year or early in 2012.
Producing 209kW and 353Nm of torque, the new 3.6 litre V6 petrol engine replaces the Wrangler's ageing 146kW/315Nm 3.8 litre V6 unit.
Along with the carmaker's new five-speed auto - replacing the current four-speed - the updated Wrangler offers a 0-100km/h sprint in 8.4 seconds and fuel consumption figures of 11.2 l/100km (down from 11.6 l/100km).
While a six-speed manual is also offered with the 2012 Wrangler, the five-speed auto benefits from a lower first-gear ratio to give the Wrangler better off-road tractability.
Australia
Speaking with Australia today, Chrysler Australia's Dean Bonthorne confirmed a local debut for the updated Wrangler and its new heart.
"The new 3.6L Pentastar V6 has been a winner in the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee, to the point of being our most popular variant of the model," Mr Bonthorne said.
"We look forward to this cutting-edge powerplant being included in the 2012 Jeep Wrangler, which we expect to reach for Australian shores this Summer."
