Ford Australia has announced an upgrade to its Transit range, which gains more power and lower fuel consumption for the new model year. The upgrade also means the green ECOnetic variant has been cancelled.

For 2012, the Transit range will be driven by a new 2.2 litre four-cylinder TDCi diesel engine - pulled from the same family as the 2.2 that features in the Ranger pickup - boosting power by 7kW/50Nm and 11kW/10Nm over the two outgoing engine variants.

In front-wheel-drive form, the 2.2 litre diesel will deliver 92kW and 330Nm of torque, while the rear-wheel-drive variants will offer 114kW and 385Nm, with the new engine replacing the outgoing 2.4 litre diesel.

Fuel consumption figures for both variants have improved, and in the case of the Transit 280S, Ford promises 7.2 l/100km - identical to the cancelled ECOnetic variant and one litre better than the regular 2.2 litre models in the 2011 range.

"I'm certain our Transit customers will welcome the arrival of this new 2.2 TDCi engine and its many benefits," Ford Australia President and CEO Bob Graziano said.

"The additional power and torque will make driving more enjoyable and the increased efficiency is sure to make a difference at the bowser."
