The range-topper in Mercedes-Benz' E-Class line -  the 2012 E 63 AMG - is next in line for the company's new V8 engine.

Changes to the exterior styling are few, but under the bonnet is AMG's new 5.5 litre twin-turbo V8 engine, replacing the 6.2 litre V8 of the current model.

While the outgoing engine developed a perfectly healthy 386kW and 630Nm, the smaller and newer 5.5 litre V8 offers 391kW and a giant 700Nm of torque between 1750 and 5000rpm.

Opt for the AMG Performance Package and you'll get an extra 23kW and 100 more of Newton's finest.

Combined with a seven-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission, the 2012 E 63 will hit 100km/h from standing in 4.3 seconds (4.4 for the Estate), and the Performance Package will shave a hundredth from that.

Fuel consumption is listed at 9.8 l/100km on the combined cycle (10 l/100km for Estate) - compared to 12.7 l/100km for the outgoing 6.2 V8. That saving is due in part to a new stop/start system.

A Sport mode-equipped three-stage ESP system figures among the 2012 E 63 AMG's standard features, along with AMG's Ride Control suspension that sees the front track widened by an addition 56mm for improved handling.

Three suspension modes are available, giving owners the choice of Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus options.

The new E 63 is also features a new electromechanical AMG speedsensitive sports steering system with a more direct ratio of 14:1 and variable power assistance that adapts according to the suspension mode.

On the styling front, the E 63 AMG remains largely unchanged but for the addition of new light-alloy wheels and 'V8 Biturbo' badging on the front quarter panels.

In the cabin is the same oblong steering wheel featured in the new CLS 63 AMG, along with the new E-Select shifter and a colour display in the instrument cluster.

Australia

The 2012 E 63 AMG is set for a European debut in September, and an Australian launch is scheduled for November. Pricing and details will be revealed closer to launch.
