Audi's A7 Sportback, unveiled in Germany last year and based on the 2009 Detroit Auto Show's Sportback concept, is now on sale in Australia.

Available in just two specifications, the 2011 A7 Sportback is driven by the largest petrol and diesel engines available in the international A7 line-up.

In petrol form, the the A7 Sportback features Audi's supercharged 3.0 litre TFSI V6, producing 224kW and 440Nm of torque, propelling the large sedan-coupe to 100km/h in a claimed 5.6 seconds.

Paired with the company's quattro all-wheel-drive system and the seven-speed S tronic automatic transmission, the A7's fuel consumption is listed at 8.2 l/100km.

The diesel-powered A7 Sportback is driven by a 3.0 litre V6 TDI engine, delivering 180kW and 500Nm of torque. The 0-100km/h sprint is knocked over in a claimed (and still-impressive) 6.5 seconds.

As with the petrol model, the A7 Sportback TDI is equipped with quattro all-wheel-drive and the seven-speed S tronic transmission. Fuel consumption is 6.0 l/100km.

Weight-saving has been a major element in the engineering design of the A7. The doors, bonnet, roof and quarter panels are all made of aluminium, helping to cut weight by around 20 percent compared to an all-steel car with the same dimensions.

The A7 Sportback Measures 1.4 metres tall, 4.97 metres long and 1.91 metres wide, riding on an exceptionally long 2.91 metre wheelbase - improving interior space and legroom.

Despite its coupe-like shape, the A7 Sportback offers a respectable 535 litres of rear storage, growing to 1390 litres with the split rear seats folded flat.

Enhancing its sporting coupe-like styling, the A7 Sportback will be available with wheels that begin at 18 inches, climbing to 20 inches on the options list.

LED headlights are available as an option, while bi-xenon headlights and LED taillights are fitted as standard.

Inside, the A7 Sportback gets ventilated massaging front seats as an option, while Audi's MMI 8-inch display system is standard. A Bang & Olufsen audio system features on the options list.
