LAND ROVER has today revealed a prototype for the first of its upcoming hybrid models, dubbed the 2013 Range Rover Range_e and based on the current-generation Range Rover Sport.
With the production model to be built on the back of the all-new 2012 Range Rover line-up, tests for the brand's new diesel-electric hybrid range will begin later this year, a fleet of five hybrids providing data ahead of a 2013 market debut.
The Range_e's diesel-electric hybrid system is mated to an eight-speed ZF transmission, and aluminium components have replaced a number of existing panels to counter the weight of the hefty lithium-ion battery packs.
While Land Rover has yet to reveal specific figures, the company's hybrid project boss Peter Richings said the Range_e should allow around 30km of all-electric driving in town, and speeds up to 110km/h in electric mode.
Earlier reports have claimed the Land Rover hybrid system will utilise a 3.0 litre diesel V6 and a 25kW electric motor, with CO2 emissions listed at 100g/km.
Achieving emissions figures in-line with much smaller cars like the Mini Cooper D, Land Rover's hybrid would outdo the Lexus RX450h, which lists CO2 emissions figures of 148g/km.
