Volvo has provided its full-sized XC90 SUV with a little brother by revealing the new XC60 at the Geneva motor show.

Due to go on sale in Australia later this year, the new XC60 retains the five-seat layout of its predecessor but adds performance, safety, connectivity and refinement improvements thanks to its adoption of Volvo's modular platform layout that also underpins the XC90.

Speaking at the vehicle's unveiling, Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson said the XC60 was indicative of Volvo's increasing reliance on SUV sales.

"Around 50 per cent of Volvo sales are SUVs and the XC60 will further sharpen our position," he said.

That ratio seems only set to grow with the imminent arrival of a new XC40 to do battle in later this year the compact segment later this year.

Volvo claims the new XC60 to be "one of the safest cars ever made" with systems including Steer Assist and Oncoming Lane Mitigation that can detect and avoid head on collisions.
