There's good news afoot for US Volkswagen fans, as a recent interview with Stefan Jacoby, Volkswagen's North American CEO, revealed some of what VW has in store for the US domestic market.

While speaking with Automotive News, Mr Jacoby confirmed pricing and a scheduled release date for Volkswagen's upcoming mid-sized sedan, as well as plans to release a smaller hatchback.

Until now, all we've had to go on has been the leaked design sketch above and that's been around since February. Now we know that the new mid-sized sedan (Passat? Is that you?) will arrive in 2012 with a starting price of US$20,000 (AU$27,800).

To be built at Chattanooga in Tennessee, the new model will rely on existing 2.0 and 2.5 litre engines for motivation with Jacoby also noting that the design for the car was finalised over the last few weeks.

There's also talk of producing a compact or mid-sized SUV, or possibly something from the Polo family at the plant.

When polled, VW dealers throughout the US felt the Polo was too small to be successful, but VW is weighing up its options which could also include a larger hatchback.

Whatever decision is made, expect the smaller offering to kick off in 2011 or 2012.

Hopefully we'll start seeing more information trickle out of the 'States regarding the new mid-sized sedan, so stay tuned for further updates.
