Volkswagen have announced the release of their new seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox, which will now be available alongside the current six-speed DSG in a limited range of front-wheel-drive applications. Volkswagen are claiming a couple of firsts with the new seven-speed, including it being the first DSG for front-traverse installation and secondly, the first DSG to use dry clutches, or clutches that are not immersed in oil.

The design of the seven-speed DSG allows it to achieve improved efficiencies, however, don’t go trying to order one in your new GTi, as the new seven-speed is only rated for 250Nm of torque. This is a gearbox designed for economy applications, not performance.

The new seven-speed DSG will initially be available in the Golf range and only with the smaller petrol and diesel engined variants. You will be able to tick the seven-speed option for your new Golf 1.4TSI or 1.9TDI but that’s it for now. Volkswagen are claiming that you will save 0.7 litres per 100km by opting for the seven-speed. Australian pricing information is not to hand but the seven-speed DSG will add a 1,750 euro premium to the purchase price of a Golf in Europe.

Given the cost a few quick calculations might be in order before you part with the hard earned on the assumption that you'll be making a saving in the long term...
