Volkswagen has reportedly said that the marque's hi-performance R range is being considered for the US market.

This means our cousins across the Pacific may soon get to sample the dynamic delights of the Passat R36, the brutal grunt of the Touareg R50 and the, er, bodykit of the Tiguan R Line.

Volkswagen of America dropped the hint in a recent email to Inside Line, but don't get your hopes up just yet - nothing's been confirmed.

"The R Line Tiguan is under consideration but [there's] no decision at this time," said Volkswagen spokesman Steve Keyes to Inside Line.

"We're also looking at other R models, but it's still in the investigation stage."

To date, the only R model to be sent to the USA has been the Golf R32 - a good car in its own right, but one that lacks the power and flexibility of the Passat R36 as well as the awe-inspiring torque and sheer presence of the R50.

Given America's reluctance to embrace diesel, the case for the R50 may fall flat before the first hurdle. The R36, on the other hand, uses the same engine and powertrain as the Passat CC (just "CC" in the 'States) and is currently produced in left-hook guise. A possibility? Maybe.

Another possibility is that VW USA was simply referring to the R Line body styling packages that are currently available in the European market. Given the distinct lack of power-ups in the show-before-go R Line range, that scenario would suck.

We'll keep you posted.
