A fix-all solution to the peak-hour blues may still be the stuff of dreams, but suitably-armed Victorian motorists can now at least get a 'heads up' on the roads to avoid thanks to a new iPhone app from VicRoads.

“We understand people want to spend less time in traffic and more time with family and friends, which is why the Brumby Labor Government is tackling congestion and building a better transport system,” Victorian Roads Minister Tim Pallas said.

“The new VicRoads Keeping Melbourne Moving digital applications include SmartPark, Travel Choice and LiveDrive, and provide important information for motorists on where they can park, where clearways are active and what the best travel routes are.

VicRoads LiveDrive - Android

Offering real-time updates on travel times, traffic conditions and incident alerts, the free LiveDrive Android app joins Vicroads' new SmartPark iPhone app and a VicRoads customer service page on Facebook.

The VicRoads LiveTraffic app is available now, for free, in the Android Marketplace.

VicRoads SmartPark - iPhone

Developed as a 'set and forget' tool, the SmartPark iPhone app reminds users of clearway times, when their parking meter will expire and the location of your car.

As futuristic as these options sound however, each function is more of a dressed-up alarm, timer and GPS checkpoint tool.

The VicRoads SmartPark app is available now, for free, in the iTunes App Store.

Travel Choice Map - Web

While not an iPhone or Android app, VicRoads' online Travel Choice Map gives motorists the opportunity to view active clearways before heading out, making trip planning easier. It also offers suggestions on the fastest route under the current conditions.

VicRoads on Facebook

Mr Pallas said the VicRoads Facebook customer service page would allow customers to ask questions online without having to call or visit a Customer Service Centre.

“VicRoads conducts 20 million transactions every year, with call centres currently receiving more than 800,000 customer service queries annually, so we’re always looking to providing people with quicker and more efficient services,” he said.

“Fans of the Facebook page will be able to submit questions and see questions and responses asked by others. Customer service representatives will provide fast and accurate information and people will have instant access to the most up-to-date information.

Road safety and road rules will also be covered on the VicRoads Facebook page, which will be monitored between 8.30am and 5pm on weekdays.
