Operation Ardent, an ongoing Victoria Police operation targeting speeding, drink and drug driving, will focus on Melbourne's South Eastern suburbs this weekend. On the job will be booze and drug buses, marked and unmarked police cars, mobile speed cameras and uniformed officers.

Statistically the second worst region in Victoria for road trauma, the Casey area - which includes Cranbourne, Springvale, Narre Warren and Endeavour Hills - has seen thirteen road fatalities and 271 serious injuries in the first six months of this year.

Working in Geelong two weeks ago, Operation Ardent resulted in 63 motorists testing positive for drink driving, from some 9000 breath tests. Victoria Police will conduct a similar number of tests in Casey, targeting the Princes Highway, South Gippsland Freeway and the Monash Freeway.

“Serious injury and fatal collisions occur in this area over the weekends and primarily involve vehicles colliding with other vehicles, or pedestrians,” Supt Neville Taylor said.

“We are committed to reducing road trauma in this area and we will not tolerate any excuses.”

Between 1 January and 30 June this year each of these roads recorded more than 140 collisions.

Booze Buses will set-up along high-risk roads and mobile police cars will roam surrounding streets ready to catch any motorists trying to avoid detection. The operation will run until midnight on Sunday.
