Toyota have announced today that they have temporarily suspended further sales of its new supercharged TRD Aurion. GoAuto have reported that a Melbourne dealer salesman was driving one of the new TRD Aurions last week when the cars engine failed.

TRD have begun their investigation into the engine failure but have reportedly not yet determined the exact cause of the failure and are confident that the engine failure is an isolated incident. Around 150 TRD Aurions have been produced with only five cars delivered to customers to-date. A further 30 orders are in hand but will remain on hold until the engine failure issue is resolved.

The TRD Aurion features a supercharged version of the standard cars 3.5-litre V6. Given the inherent strength and reliability of Toyota engines it is surprising that such a failure has occurred.

Toyota’s public relations manager Mike Breen has confirmed that production of the TRD Aurion has also ceased while TRD engineers track the cause of the engine failure.

“We’ve sold only a handful of cars so what we are doing is, rather than selling cars, we should stop sales while we can manage it. We will check each vehicle, which takes about two hours per car, and that should be complete by early next week.” said Mr Breen.

A rather unfortunate start for the much anticipated Toyota performance saloon and we will keep you updated as more becomes known.
