Debuting in its regular econobox guise at the Paris Auto Show earlier this month, the 2011 Suzuki Swift is about to get a performance and styling upgrade in the form of the Swift R concept.

Inspired by the company's motorcycle range and its hero GSX-R sports bike, the 2011 Suzuki Swift R concept is scheduled to debut at the Beijing Auto Show next April.

While its hot-hatch intent is clear in its styling, Suzuki remains understandably tight-lipped about what we can expect under the skin. Reports out of Japan however suggest that Suzuki will plant a force-fed 1.4 litre engine under the bonnet, producing around 130 to 140kW - possibly sourced from new partner Volkswagen.

With some seven months until the opening of the Beijing Auto Show, there's certainly time to speculate.

In its regular form, the 2011 Swift will be powered by a a 1.2 litre Dual-VVT petrol engine producing 70kW and 118Nm of torque - bettering the European model's 1.3 litre engine (which Suzuki has singled out for comparison), and coming mighty close to the Australian-delivered 74kW/133Nm 1.5 litre engine.

Speaking of the new Swift earlier this year, Suzuki Australia boss Tony Devers said the Australian-delivered model will arrive before the middle of 2011.

"We are very excited about the preliminary release of the new car, but we are still some way off finalising the Australian version of the next Swift,” Mr Devers said.

“The new Swift doesn’t go on sale here until the first half of next year, so we still have some development time to work through.”
