Germany's major manufacturers must be a bit miffed that a bunch of foreigners are attempting to earn the title of fastest sports car on the hallowed ground that is their Nurburgring Nordschliefe. Nissan's GT-R, Lexus' LF-A and Chevrolet's Corvette ZR1 have all been spotted turning in hot laps at the world-renowned circuit, but now Mercedes-Benz's SL65 AMG Black Edition has taken to the track to demonstrate that when it comes to building fast cars, the home team still has a few tricks up its sleeve.

The SL65 Black Edition boasts at least 670hp from its twin-turbocharged 6-litre V12, although some believe the power figure could be as high as 720hp. Carbon-fibre bodywork and a fixed roof will help the Black Edition shed some pounds, while suspension and rolling stock will be upgraded for serious performance.

The SL65 AMG Black Edition is expected to be unveiled at the German Grand Prix in July. Sales are slated to start early next year and total production is said to be limited to just 350 units. If you can't hold out until 2009 to get your Black Edition fix, then follow this link to check out some video of a prototype tearin' it up around the Nordschliefe.
