RTA NSW Exploring Wider Use For E-Toll System

THE ROADS AND TRAFFIC AUTHORITY in New South Wales is exploring ways to utilise its E-Toll systems - and the E-Tag device attached to the windscreen of its customers cars - with a wider array of services to expand its customer base and revenues.

"The RTA has been investigating opportunities to extend its E-Toll applications to encourage the uptake of electronic tags and make motoring easier for existing E-Toll customers, an RTA," an RTA spokesperson told The Motor Report.

"These opportunities include use of E-Tags in areas such as car parks and service stations."

A similar service is available in other countries, where a hand-held E-Tag scanner is attached to fuel pumps.

"The RTA has met with Caltex, Flemington Markets, Sydney Port Authority, and the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust to discuss E-Tag tolling infrastructure or services, " the spokesperson said.

While the E-Toll technology is currently used exclusively for transit fees, expanding the technology into parking and fuel payment could see the RTA's E-Toll revenue double to around $170 million, with potential for income up to $500 million as the technology's presence grows.
