Rolls-Royce has announced that it enjoyed strong demand for its product during 2008, so much so, that it recorded a 20 percent increase in sales over 2007 (1,212 sales compared to 1,010 in 2007). This performance was the fifth consecutive annual sales increase for the super luxury manufacturer.

As you would expect with a product as outlandishly awesome as the Phantom, finding new homes for them was a doddle. The most popular model was the extended wheel base Phantom sedan (accounting for more than half of all sales), with the Phantom Drophead Coupe coming in second.

Rolls-Royce partly attribute its ’08 sales increase to the new Phantom Coupe, which it believes helped to bring new buyers to the Rolls-Royce fold.

In spite of the crumbling economy in North America, it was still the hot-bed of Rolls sales, accounting for 38 percent overall. Interestingly, sales in other major markets grew massively, with Northern Europe posting a 95 percent increase and the Middle East a 48 percent increase.

However, there is no mention of how the famous marque performed in the last quarter of 2008, when the brown stuff hit the fan in a big way (economically speaking). We suspect that the excellent overall sales result, was largely due to a record start to 2008, offset somewhat by a slower finish. At least that’s our take, and watching to see how the great RR performs in 2009, will be interesting.

Rolls-Royce is confident, and on track to introduce the RR4 or ‘baby Phantom’ this year; which it expects will further boost sales in 2009.

Best of British/German luck to them we say. We’d like to be able to report a record 2009 for RR, this time next year.
