While working to bring the ultra-green Q5 Hybrid to market, Audi is also reportedly developing a pair of performance-focussed SQ5 and RS Q5 versions of the small SUV.

According to Car & Driver, Audi has recently registered trademarks for both badges, revealing that the German carmaker may be preparing to battle BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the performance SUV segment.

The report coincides with news that Porsche has approved development of a new sub-Cayenne SUV, built on the Q5 platform and expected to be named Cajun

With Porsche developing its Q5-based Cajun (and likely a Cajun S performance variant), it seems a small walk from there to the possibility of a high-powered SQ5 and RS Q5.

Adding credence to the possibility of a hi-po Q5, Audi revealed its Q5 Custom Concept in 2009, featuring a lowered suspension setup, Audi's familiar RS wheels, a unique paint scheme and a top-mounted rear spoiler.

Importantly, the Q5 Custom Concept was powered by Audi's supercharged 3.0 litre TFSI six-cylinder petrol engine, developing 300kW and hitting 100km/h in 4.4 seconds.

A sign of things to come, perhaps.
