RENAULT IS REPORTEDLY in talks with a number of carmakers, Germany's Daimler chief among them, on the potential for cost-cutting partnerships.

Renault Chief Operating Officer Patrick Pelata, while confirming that the French carmaker is talking to Daimler, said that most carmakers are involved in similar discussions.

"We are discussing serious matters with Daimler," Mr Pelata told press in Europe this morning.

"Carmakers are holding discussions with each other. We are in talks with at least someone on all subjects."

Speaking with Reuters, a representative for Daimler said: "We speak to various manufacturers, including Renault, about possibilities to cooperate."

Mr Pelata confirmed that Renault is looking at ways to cut development costs by sharing engines, transmission platforms and new technologies.

He said that the global financial crisis had lead manufacturers to sharing the costs of "anything that is very expensive," including the development of electric vehicle technology.

Fellow French carmaker PSA Peugeot-Citroen is in talks with Daimler's German rival BMW on the potential for expanding the existing partnership between the two companies.

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche reportedly told Germany's Auto Motor Sport magazine in February that Daimler is likely to announce a new partnership early in 2010.
