Peugeot claims it is at the cutting edge of automotive technology in Europe and who are we to argue.

With 961 patent applications filed in 2008, PSA Peugeot has been designated by France’s National Institute for Industrial Property as the country’s leading patent filer for the second year running.

The amount of patents applications being made by PSA Peugeot attests to the Group’s strong focus on innovation and to the creativity of its research and development teams.(That's what Peugeot says, and, again, who are we to argue?).

PSA Peugeot is locked in the never-ending and costly struggle that bedevills all car manufacturers: that of having to continually bring new and innovative products to market, to ensure its model range maintains a technological advantage and doesn’t go stale for consumers. (This is the problem, many analysts have argued, that is at the root of problems for US automakers... they'd simply fallen behind.)

In recent years the brief has been to produce cleaner, safer, more energy-efficient and more affordable vehicles.

The patents filed in 2008 by PSA Peugeot were primarily related to projects in four main areas:

  1. Improving petrol and diesel internal combustion engines.
  2. Deploying second-generation Stop & Start technology by 2010.
  3. Deploying a full HDi hybrid by 2011 (pictured).
  4. Stepping up the development of technologies for electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and zero-emission vehicles.

Other patents involved vehicle bodies and structural solutions that reduce overall weight and improve impact-resistance and safety.

In 2008, the PSA Peugeot group allocated €2.1 billion to research and development, representing 5.1% of automotive turnover and an increase of €300 million over 2007. Not a bad effort Peugeot.
