MOTORISTS could see a significant jump in petrol prices over the coming Anzac weekend, with the NRMA predicting a rise of up to 20 cents a litre in Sydney.

While recent price wars among the retail fuel giants has seen fuel prices level off - and in some areas drop below the expected level - NRMA President Wendy Machin says it could all change in the lead-up to the Anzac weekend.

"Sydney motorists are currently enjoying prices five to 11 cents per litre cheaper than the other capital cities," Ms Machin said. "This is great news for Sydney motorists but nothing good lasts forever."

Ms Machin said that while retailers had kept prices low over the past week, the regular pricing cycle is likely to be restored this week, which would normally see the price of unleaded petrol rise by around 12 to 15 cents per litre.

"In this scenario, NRMA can see the possibility of Sydney prices rising by up to 20 cents per litre by the Anzac Day long weekend if the five cents per litre discounting stops as well."
