For those of you who made it to the Sydney Motor Show last year, you may have noticed the black 308 hatch that Peugeot had on display. Now, I have to confess to not being a fan of the 308’s styling but there was something about the black one that had me thinking we will all be getting used to this new look fairly quickly and actually liking it.

Peugeot's new 308 hatch will also be making an appearance at this year's Melbourne Motor Show from 29 February to 10 March at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. Peugeot say that the 308 features clearly recognisable Peugeot styling cues and builds on the strengths of its triple-million selling predecessor, the 307.

The Peugeot 308 will be available with a choice of standard or turbo 1.6 litre petrol BMW-PSA engines or the thriftier options of a 1.6 or 2.0 litre turbo diesel engine.

Peugeot have been earning quite a name for safety in recent times and the 308 is not about to let the team down having earned a five star Euro NCAP rating for its safety features and crash test performance.

Peugeot also claim that their primary objective in developing the new Peugeot 308 was to advance its quality beyond that of any previous Peugeot. To this end, development engineers road tested the 308 over some 2,000,000 kms across a variety of terrains to maximise driving quality and durability.

The quality focus includes the interior styling and materials, where the French maker has sought to match the best of its European rivals.

The 308 is to be launched initially as a hatch only, with Touring and CC convertible models scheduled for later in 2008.
