Logbooks recording the number of hours driven by learner drivers are going paperless with the NSW Government trialing a new smartphone app-based system.

Being tested initially with learner drivers in Western Sydney and regional NSW, the first 100 applicants will form the basis of the six-week trial.

There are four apps to try: Licence Ready, Learner Journey, Ezy Log and L2P and as an incentive, participants will receive a free Safer Drivers Course and 20 hours towards the required 120 hours of driving practice.

After studying feedback, the successful apps will be rolled-out widely later in the year.

“The apps have been designed so that they don’t distract drivers or their supervisors, and comply with all applicable road rules relating to the use of mobile phones in vehicles,” explained Melinda Pavey, NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight.

You’ll need to move quick with applications available from today in Castle Hill (Sydney) and Maitland (near Newcastle).
