As we've covered in the past, news of the mythical RX-9 has always been thin on the ground. Enthusiast renderings on the other hand have always flown thick and fast. And why not? With the GT-R now gracing roads around the world and both the STI and Evolution X long gone from the rumour mill, the next rotary-propelled sports car from Mazda remains one of the few mysteries left in the next-gen Japanese sports car circus.

Based on the logical assumption that the RX-8 represents a design language that Mazda are moving away from—although the flared guard of the new Mazda 6 might wish to disagree—FoMoCoNews forum member rhoadwh (gesundheit) has dug deep and pulled out this stunning home-brewed 3D render of what he thinks the RX-9 might—or at least should—look like.

Borrowing varying degrees of badassness from the Taiki and Furai concepts—both of which form part of the Nagare range of design possibilities for future Mazda styling—as well as layout and design elements from previous RX-7s rhoadwh's concept seems to perfectly straddle the barrier between concept and production reality. While there's no denying that his concept is very much something we'd never see hit the roads of today, there's also no telling where the future of automotive design will take us in the next five or so years.

Is it too late for the next Batman film to choose a new Batmobile?
