NISSAN'S LUXURY Infiniti is set to unveil two new production models at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California, one of them rumoured to be an M-based coupe.

According to the US' Autoblog website, basic details and a single preview illustration obtained from an Infiniti insider reveal that the new models will be extensions of the current line-up, taking the brand "into an area we haven't been before."

The brush-stroked teaser images above follow the same theme utilised in the lead-up to last year's Infiniti M unveiling at Pebble Beach.

While both models are believed to be coupe variants of existing models, at least one is understood to be a performance-oriented model based on the current Infiniti M range, above and beyond the existing G37 coupe.

If Infiniti is readying a new performance coupe, it will likely draw inspiration from the Infiniti Essence concept (above), the brand's stunning concept revealed at last year's Geneva Motor Show.

The Essence, while a concept only, is powered by Nissan's 3.7 litre V6 petrol engine, with extra boost coming from a pair of turbochargers and a 117kW electric motor, for a total output of 441kW.

Earlier this year, Nissan Australia re-affirmed its commitment to returning the Infiniti brand to Australia, with the business case for bringing the marque here close to being approved.

Plans to bring Infiniti back to Australia have existed since 2006, but the recent global financial crisis stalled the project.

However, speaking with TMR at the local launch of the 370Z Roadster, Nissan Australia Managing Director and CEO Dan Thompson said that Infiniti is still a high priority for the company, and that an official announcement on the brand’s future in Australia is expected to be made late this year.
