Like the car itself, the news concerning Nissan’s GT-R is relentless and unstoppable. News is just out that Nissan’s favourite son has broken though the 7:30 seconds barrier at the ‘Green Hell’, posting a Nurburgring lap time of 7:29 seconds – astonishing really.

For much the same reason that the Top Gear boys claim a 4 second per lap wet weather disadvantage on their test track, Nissan test driver Tochio Suzuki has wiped a full 9 seconds off the GT-R’s previous time of 7:38 seconds at the ‘Ring - thanks largely to dry weather.

"At last year's testing, we were frustrated by the conditions at the Nurburgring, always believing that the GT-R could go under seven minutes 30 seconds. Below seven minutes 30 seconds, the GT-R proves it is among the fastest mass-production cars in the world," said Kazutoshi Mizuno, Chief Vehicle Engineer for GT-R.

Even more impressive is the news that this lap time was recorded on stock JDM rubber…

A lap time of 7:29 seconds means that the GT-R is quicker around this particular track (what other track is there…) than the mega-dollar, mega-exotic Koenigsegg CCR, Mercedes-Benz SLR 722 GT and even Porsche’s vaunted GT2. Its mixing it with the big dollar cars and showing them a clean set of heels.

If you think the GT-R has reached its peak and that the handful of supercars still circling the ‘Ring quicker than the hot Nissan have been let off the hook, then think again - next up will be the lighter, tighter and more powerful V-Spec version of the GT-R.

Nissan continue to tweak the standard GT-R and are reported to have beefed up spring rates and engine mounts, a running change for the JDM spec cars and standard fitment on the U.S. and U.K. bound cars. The development continues, so we should expect the lap times to continue to fall.
