In an effort to sell more of their rather bland but highly competent 380 range, Mitsubishi Motors Australia Ltd (MMAL) are set to introduce their series III 380 range. The good news is that the prices are going to get even sharper. The bad news is that it doesn’t look much different to the series II.

Sales of the series II 380 have slipped 18 percent this year in the face of a bullish car market which is expected to top one million sales in a calendar year for the first time ever.

MMAL have experienced growth in sales of their range of imported vehicles but the 380 has been wandering out of showrooms in an uninspiring fashion.

"We believe that with this realignment of the product line-up, the 380 Series III is now, more than ever, the perfect vehicle for Australian families. The 380 is positioned as the best value model in its segment",

Mitsubishi Motors Australia president Robert McEniry said yesterday.

The series III update includes a revised interior, external design changes and specification upgrades along with a realignment of model variants.

The drivetrain remains unchanged and features the 3.8-litre V6 engine with 175kW. The majority of cars sold feature the five-speed automatic with sports mode sequential shift while a five-speed manual gearbox remains an option.

All 380 models have dual front and side airbags, ABS anti-skid brakes, automatic climate control airconditioning and heating, power windows, cruise control and power-adjustable driver's seat.

The base model ES gets a new sports front bumper, fog lamps, alloy wheels and traction control and costs $28,990 (manual) and $30,990 (automatic).

In addition to the base-model ES, Mitsubishi have introduced a new variant to help launch the series III upgrade called the ES Sports. The ES features a rear wing, larger 17” diameter alloy wheels, upgraded sports suspension a sunroof and Bluetooth connectivity. The ES Sports costs the same $28,990 as the ES. So, they wouldn’t be expecting to sell many base model ES 380’s then…?

Buying an equivalent Falcon, Commodore or Aurion is now going to cost you around a $6,000 premium over the 380 series III ES or ES Sports and MMAL are no doubt hoping that this will stimulate sales.

A new luxury variant has been added to the 380 range. The 380 GTL is as the name suggests a luxury version of the 380 GT that includes leather and a sunroof and retails for $44,990.
