Mercedes-Benz S-Class S 250 CDI Four-Cylinder Diesel Launched In Europe

Mercedes-Benz's flagship, the venerable S-Class, now has a four-cylinder engine in its line-up for the first time in its 60-year history. 

Launched in Europe this week, the S 250 CDI BlueEfficiency is powered by the company's tried-and-true direct-injected 2.2 litre four-cylinder diesel engine, developing 150kW and an impressive 500Nm of torque at 1600rpm. 

Paired with Mercedes' seven-speed 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission, the S 250 CDI BlueEfficiency makes its way to 100km/h in just 8.2 seconds.

By comparison, Volkswagen's 125kW/350Nm 2.0 litre performance-oriented diesel hatch, the Golf GTD, shuffles to 100km/h in 8.1 seconds.

Thanks to both its low-capacity diesel engine and the ECO start/stop function, the S 250 CDI BlueEfficiency lists fuel consumption figures of 5.7 l/100km.

Australia

Speaking with TMR today, Mercedes-Benz Australia's Jerry Stamoulis confirmed that the S 250 CDI is under consideration for Australia, and the company hopes to confirm details later this year.

The S 250 CDI's engine is no stranger to local showrooms, with versions featuring in the likes of the E 250 CDI and the C 250 CDI.
