Ahead of its Beijing Motor Show debut this weekend, official images and details of the Mercedes-Benz GLK have been leaked onto the internet – a process that is becoming de rigueur.

Arguably the first handsome SUV to be produced by the German manufacturer, the GLK will be going toe to toe with the likes of BMW’s ungainly X3 and the yet to be released Audi Q5.

There will be a choice of either a RWD or 4Matic AWD drivetrains along with a variety of four and six-cylinder engines both petrol and diesel. The range topping GLK 350 will feature MB’s 3.5-litre V6 engine with 200kW/268hp.

Mercedes will be producing the GLK at their Bremen plant and although there has been no-word on production of a RHD GLK, it is considered highly likely.

As one would expect, there is plenty of ‘fruit’ to be enjoyed by future GLK owners. On the inside, the GLK will be available with a panoramic sunroof, SIRIUS satellite radio, Sienna Pine wood trim and an optional COMMAND interface. While standard fare includes dual-zone climate control, electric front seats, adjustable steering column, Bluetooth and a 5inch colour display.

Externally, the GLK will feature standard 19-inch wheels and Bi-Xenon headlights. The GLK350 pictured is due to go on sale in North America in early 2009.
