We've all seen them lurking outside supermarkets and inside shopping centres, and odds are most of us have ridden one at some stage in our lives. But does a kid-size fibreglass Postman Pat van have what it takes be a practical road-going vehicle?

We'd say no, but Englishman Perry Watkins has taken the plunge anyway and converted one of the iconic children's rides into what may be considered the world's smallest car.

It's 99cm tall, 66cm wide, 130cm long, is powered by a 150cc single-cylinder petrol motor and rides a modified quad bike frame, but it's registered and Watkins is able to drive it on public roads - a dicey proposition, considering it's about as tall as a Labrador and uses the occupant's knees as an impact-absorbing structure.

As dangerous as it is though, we've got to give Watkins some serious kudos. Not only has he managed to create a fully-functioning car out of a children's ride, but he's also gutsy enough to squeeze his six-foot frame into it and go for a drive.

It's yet to be officially ratified as the world's smallest road-legal vehicle, but with his creation only half the size of the existing record-holder (the Peel P50), Watkins is confident it'll clinch the title.
