Yesterday we reported on the $AUD46 fee that London Mayor Ken Livingstone intends slapping on drivers of ‘petrol guzzlers’ that enter London city. Mayor Livingstone intends to inject the revenue attained back into improved facilities for bikes.

Porsche, whose sports cars will likely be recipients of the new tax, hit back and wrote to the Mayor stating that they were prepared to take legal action to prevent the new tax coming into effect later this year.

Well, that got Mayor Livingstone’s blood boiling and a spokesperson from the Mayor’s office stated that Porsche’s interference is “a double attack on Londoners” and that they (Porsche) were attempting to remove the “democratic rights of Londoners” , despite the fact that requesting a judicial review of government imposed legislation is a democratic right.

Do non-bike riding Londoners really believe that this new tax will achieve lowered CO2 levels in central London? What is Mayor Livingstone doing about local industry and their CO2 production levels?

The motor vehicle is such an easy target for politicians looking for a bit of publicity. We should be used to the shenanigans by now. Don’t go backing down Porsche!
