THESE DAYS most of the pedigreed legendary supercar manufacturers are owned by larger parent companies. Lamborghini is in with Volkswagen via Audi, and Porsche – despite its recent attempts at a takeover and a merger – is in there as well.

Both Ferrari and Maserati are owned by Fiat, and until recently Aston Martin was owned by Ford.

Today though comes news that the relatively new Swedish supercar manufacturer Koenigsegg is among the remaining suitors for GM Europe’s Saab brand, a fellow Swedish company.

Swedish financial newspaper Dagens Industri, has reported that Koenigsegg is, along with a group of “very wealthy people", busily organising the necessary funds for the bid.

Along with Koenigsegg, the remaining interested parties include US financier Ira Rennert’s Renco Group, and Italian carmaker Fiat, seemingly eager to get its hands on as many of GM’s brands as possible.

"According to sources close to GM the toughest battle is expected between U.S. billionaire Ira Rennert and Swedish carmaker Koenigsegg," Dagens Industri said.

The paper went on to say Koenigsegg boss Christian von Koenigsegg refused to either confirm or deny the report – often a sign that there’s at least some amount of truth to a claim.
