The American car maker has confirmed that it is bringing back its Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer nameplates by 2020 while reaffirming its plans for pick-up truck expected to be based on the next-generation Wrangler.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer is set to be a premium seven-seat SUV that would sit above the current Jeep Grand Cherokee and go head-to-head with the likes of the Land Rover Discovery. Though no details have been given, it is expected the Wagoneer will be a luxury-focussed five-seater and the Grand Wagoneer will have a seven-seat configuration.

Jeep is currently in the process of increasing production of its models in the SUV and pick-up segments which have experienced a big increase in demand and has committed a further $1 billion into its US factories to this end. Jeep also hopes that the increased production capacity will help it expand into other global markets.

"The expansion of our Jeep lineup has been and continues to be the key pillar of our strategy. Our commitment to internationalise the Jeep brand is unwavering, and with these last moves, we will finally have the capacity to successfully penetrate markets other than the US," said Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Fiat Chrysler.

While no details on when the cars will launch or whether they will be offered locally have been revealed, FCA's local arm has already confirmed interest.

"While it's early days we are in the process of creating a business case to expand the Jeep lineup in Australia to bring these great new products to Australian consumers," said a Fiat Chrysler Australia spokesperson.
