According to the UK's Channel 4, Jaguar has confirmed plans for a four-door saloon which would see it competing with the the likes of the Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide and Lamborghini Estoque.

The report notes that the Jaguar offering "takes the luxury saloon to new heights in terms of its technical enhancements". Sounds pretty swish then. Slated to replace the ageing XJ in Jaguar's lineup, the new saloon is outlined as featuring XF styling on an XK chassis.

The new saloon could debut this year and will feature a range of engine options including Jaguar's new 3.0 litre V6 diesel and the new 5.0 litre direct-injection V8s, which come in supercharged and naturally-aspirated forms.

If true, this would make '09 a bumper year for Jaguar who has already confirmed that the supercharged XF-R and updated XJ, XK and XKR models are all scheduled for release this year.

While we're not entirely sold on the whole four-door saloon thing, we'd be happy to spend some quality 'one-on-one' time with the Lamborghini Estoque. Nevertheless, we're intrigued to see what Jaguar has up its sleeve. There have been some good things coming from Jaguar in recent times and when you're hot you're hot.

And you were thinking the cash-strapped Jaguar would be sitting on its hands for a while?
