The accolades continue rolling in for Korean manufacturer Hyundai. We've previously reported that the Hyundai Genesis sedan was named by influential US publication Consumer Reports as 'Best Upscale Sedan'.

Now, putting an additional feather in Hyundai's cap, the Genesis has been named the 2009 North American Car of the Year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

A jury of 50 independent automotive journalists from the USA and Canada evaluated the new cars introduced into North America in 2008 and chose the Genesis as the best of them. The Ford Flex and Volkswagen Jetta TDI were the other finalists.

The North American COTY jurors are drawn from independent automotive journalists in the USA and Canada. They judge the cars on a number of factors including innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar. That Hyundai can beat the field in the world's largest automotive market perhaps gives a very strong warning to other manufacturers about what the company can now achieve.

Much closer to home, The Motor Report annointed the Hyundai i30 diesel auto as runner-up in the light/small car category in the inaugural TMR '2008 Best Drive, Best Value' Awards. Also closer to home, the Hyundai i30 SX medium-sized hatch and iMax CRDi 8 seater pulled off class wins in Australia's Best Cars Awards.

With some tasty new models yet to arrive here, it is increasingly apparent that the 'big Korean' is a brand to be taken very seriously.

Now, bring on the coupe.
