Last year we saw a mint example of a 1971 Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III set a new sale price record for an Australian car, a massive $750,000. Not bad you might be thinking. Well, that record has been comprehensively smashed with the $920,000 sale of a Monaro based HRT 427, one of only two ever built.

The buyer is a fanatical Monaro collector who wants to be known only as ‘Chooka’. Chooka has a collection of 20 low kilometre original condition Monaros, starting with the 1968 HK and as of yesterday, finishing with the 2002 HRT 427. According to Chooka, the HRT 427’s don’t grow on trees and as far as he is concerned, are priceless.

Chooka purchased the HRT 427 from Sydney car dealer, Classic Throttle Shop, who consider the big cube coupe to be a million dollar car, due to its rarity and specification.

The HRT 427 was the first time we say a 7.0-litre V8 shoehorned into HSV’s product and it set tongues wagging at its show debut. A limited run production version was imminent and touted to be the most expensive car ever made by an Australian manufacturer at the time – unfortunately it was not to be and many Aussie HSV fans still have a sour taste in their mouth from the decision to kill the project.

The HRT 427 that now resides in Chooka’s garage, features an interior set-up for racing, with lashings of carbon-fibre. Under the hood is a massaged version of GM’s 7.0-litre V8 pushing out a massive 417kW. A racing brake system is used to pull the big coupe down from its estimated top speed of 299km/h. Inside and out, the HRT 427 was built for racing.

To put this price into some perspective, HSV admitted to spending $500,000 developing the first HRT 427.

Well done Chooka! No-doubt the price you have paid will prove to be a bargain in the coming years.
