HSV fans should get ready to go a little weak at the knees with this report. First pictures of GM’s LS9 engine have become available and its basically a supercharged 6.2-litre LS3. Destined for the Corvette ZR1 the new mill is tipped to produce a very handy 485kW/650hp. Being a somewhat simpler solution to the 7.0-litre handbuilt LS7, this is one engine package that could very easily find its way into future HSV product…

The supercharger is a twin screw unit with an air-to-water intercooler and while little else is currently known we should be expecting some hot lap times from the ZR1 which has recently been seen testing at the Nurburgring. With more power than the 600hp Viper SRT10 the LS9 powered ZR1 should be challenging the 7:38 laid down by Nissan’s new GT-R.

GM promised us BMW M5 rivalling power a year or so back and it looks as though they will soon be delivering on that promise and leaving a bit of change on the table. Expect to see the ZR1 and its new LS9 power-plant debuted at the Detroit Auto Show in January of 2008.
