Ferrari Considering A Return To Turbo: Report

FERRARI ENGINE BOSS Jean Jacques says the Italian supercar company is considering a return to turbocharging, but it must first overcome the technology's main problem: lag.

Speaking with Britain's Autocar magazine, Jacques said that turbocharging "will come eventually", but that any sort of power delay in a Ferrari engine is unacceptable.

Jacques said that the Multiair variable valve technology owned by Fiat (Ferrari's parent company) would not work, attempts to use the system on the F430's V8 proving that the technology is not suitable for high output engines.

Ferrari's dual-clutch transmission - which features in the California and the new 458 Italia - can operate at up to 10,000rpm and would, Jacques told Autocar, be a viable option for a turbocharged Ferrari.

Utilising turbochargers in future models would not be a first for Ferrari, with both the legendary F40 and the 288 GTO featuring twin-turbo V8 engines.
