Mistsubishi have officially announced that their upcoming Evo X will feature a dual-sequential gearbox (DSG) much like the type currently garnering critical acclaim in a number of Volkswagen models.

The new gearbox will incorporate two clutches, one for the odd gears and one for the even effectively allowing pre-selection of the next gear and greatly reducing the time required to effect a gear change.

Mitsubishi cannot call it a DSG so they locked their creative geniuses away for a weekend and came up with Twin Clutch SST (Sport Shift Transmission), which is well…titillating.

The new Twin Clutch SST will feature steering wheel mounted paddle shifts and a choice of three shift modes that will vary the speed of gear changes.

Base model Evo’s are still likely to make do with a five speed manual according to Top Gear. While this may be true it seems odd to us that any manufacturer would still offer a five-speed manual in their ‘halo’ performance model…surely it will be a six-speed?!

Top Gear have also confirmed that the Evo’s AWD control system has been fettled and includes the addition of Active Stability Control (ASC) to the centre diff along with the usual Evo features such as yaw control (now garnished with Yaw rate feedback control) and ABS. The ASC features brake pressure sensors on each wheel that with the help of some computer skulduggery allow for improved braking performance and better grip when accelerating.

If that all sounds like a load of techno witchcraft then you are right and it wouldn’t be an Evo without it, unless of course it was the ‘original’ master of AWD, yaw controlled mayhem…the GT-R. Imitation is as they say the sincerest form of flattery.

The Evo X will be unveiled at the Tokyo motor show and we should see it in Australia sometime during 2008.
