Skoda has added a new turbo-diesel engine and DSG gearbox to its performance-oriented Octavia RS range, giving the Golf-based family car a substantial boost in torque, mechanical efficiency and fuel economy.

Power for the 2.0-litre TDI inline-four is 125kW, while peak torque of 350Nm is available from just 1800rpm. The twin-clutch DSG transmission is, like the engine, borrowed from VW's extensive parts bin - which in this case is definitely a good thing. We had great things to say about VW's DSG system when we sampled it in the Passat R36 and Golf R32 not too long ago, so the addition of the fancy twin-clutch tech to the RS should be a boon for Skoda's plain-Jane Octavia.

Aside from the oil-burning powerplant and DSG cogswapper, the rest of the Octavia RS TDI is pretty much the same as the regular petrol-powered Octavia RS. That means you still get a nicely-executed bodykit, sports-tuned and lowered suspension, body-hugging heated front seats, 18-inch rims, ABS, stability control, traction control and engine braking control. Should you ever find yourself in the unenviable position of needing them, you'll be pleased to note that a full complement of airbags is also standard on the RS.

Pricing and final specs have yet to be announced, however we'll have more for you once the Octavia RS TDI is officially launched later this month. Stay tuned.
