It would seem that our home grown VE Commodore is adding some more silver to its trophy cabinet, this time overseas. CAR Middle East magazine has named the Chevrolet Lumina SS as the “Best Sports Saloon” of 2007, as part of its annual Car of the Year awards.

The judging panel was made up of six automotive experts from the region who rated the cars based on factors such as quality, innovation, engineering and style. They then looked at how relevant the cars where to the UAE market.

We of course know the Lumina SS as the VE Holden Commodore SS, with its 6.0-litre L76 Chevy V8. The guys at Top Gear know our HSV Clubsport (another variant of the VE Commodore V8) as the Vauxhall VXR8 and the folks in the States will soon be buying the Commodore SS in the form of a Pontiac G8 GT.

So what did the judges really like? They took their cue from Jeremy Clarkson’s recent review with one judge noting, “no other car offers this level of practicality, performance, and potential tail-sliding fun for the money.” Can't argue with that!
