It just wouldn't be a new performance car launch if the 'green yardstick', the Nurburgring, wasn't brought out for some measuring.

This time around, it's the Chevrolet Camaro SS, and the result announced by GM is a respectable 8 minutes 19 seconds.

With the focus being on the pointy end of the sports car field, over 8 minutes sounds a bit limp in comparison to its leaf-sprung stablemate the Corvette ZR-1 or the techno-wizard Nissan GT-R.

However, when you consider that the projected price for the Camaro is USD$30,000 (AUD$45,500) - which is about half that of the GT-R or the ZR-1 - suddenly it’s not so bad.

The 8:19 time makes the Camaro faster than its Zeta sibling, the Pontiac GXP - based on the Holden Commodore.

To put that in perspective, it only puts the car a second slower than the absolutely bonkers Lexus IS-F, and faster than a Porsche Cayman S.

Now, to get it down here...
