BMW 1 Series coupe photo and possible 3.0-litre turbo M version

Some reasonable images of BMW’s upcoming 1 Series coupe have surfaced on the internet. Obviously still disguised around the boot and tail-light area this image does give us a good look at the undisguised flank and C pillar.

Frankly it looks a bit ho-hu

Frankly it looks a bit ho-hum but we will reserve our judgment until we see the final rear end treatment. The looks of the 1 Series have always polarised opinion and expecting the coupe to transcend the shackles of Chris Bangle's flame surfacing is probably akin to wishful thinking.

The real news concerns the US market where BMW have confirmed that the coupe will not be offered with a four-cylinder option. Instead it will be available with BMW’s magnificent 3.0-litre magnesium/aluminium six-cylinder currently know to us in the 130i as well as the 3 and 5 series cars, Z4 roadster and the X3/X5 SUV’s.

Even more exciting is the possibility of an M-Coupe that would use the 3.0-litre turbo-charged six-cylinder engine from the 335i. Now that sounds like more fun than a poke in the eye to us and may usher in the era of the first affordable M-car since well…forever.
