First the Audi R8…then the Audi R8 V10…and if that wasn’t enough we now have evidence of a pint-sized R series Audi. South Africa's topCar Magazine have recently reported the existence of what they call the Audi R4.

Assuming it makes production the little fella will slot into the niche currently filled by the Porsche Boxter and Cayman. If it was to become available in Australia the RS version may even sway an E92 BMW M3 purchaser…or two.

The Audi R4 is expected to come equipped with the same turbo-charged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder that we currently see in the VW Golf, mid-mounted and fettled to produce a little over 200Kw.

An RS version is likely to use an in-line turbo-charged 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine that should produce around 260kW.

The chassis for the R4 is a new design although the final product is expected to make good use of Audi’s parts bin for the drive-train and ancillaries.
