The next-generation ML-Class isn't the only new SUV that Mercedes-Benz is working on, as these new spy photos of the upcoming 2012 GL-Class reveal.

Spied testing alongside the first-generation GL-Class, this test car for Mercedes' big new GL gives away little in the way of styling details, but it is clear that we can expect that same upright grille and wave-like headlights that feature across Mercedes' newer models.

While the new GL-Class is known to be based on a version of the platform underpinning the new ML (also featured in the new Jeep Grand Cherokee), further technical details remain unclear.

Powertrain options are expected to include Mercedes' new direct-injected V6 and V8 engines, including the new 5.5 litre twin-turbo V8.

In Australia, the current-generation GL-Class is powered by a 3.0 litre V6 turbo-diesel producing 165kW and 510Nm of torque, and a 285kW/530Nm 5.5 litre petrol V8.

The new GL-Class is expected to retain the basic overall shape and size of the outgoing model, although the heavy camouflage suggests extensive sheetmetal updates.
